FAQ - Use of Description Tag

When the Description tag is present, some search engines will use the information in the tag immediately below the Title when displaying search results. When it is not available, the first items of text that appear on the page are displayed in this location. This frequently means that navigation, design or other elements not directly related to the content of your page are displayed in your search engine results. The image below shows how this is displayed in Google search results. The information displayed below the page title is the meta description included on the Missouri S&T home page.

Generally the description should be between 12 and 24 words.
